"Stuart Barry (Series 12), David Allinson (781 entry) and myself (803 entry)were fortunate to be allowed to visit HMS Daring on its recent visit to Adelaide. David & I are ex-Caledonia Tiffs. I’m the tubby one, Dave is the scruffy one, Stuart is a Wafu Tiff……. The other bloke is an ex cook called Phil Rundle who now plies his trade as an Australian Policemen.

We were shown around by WO ET Clint Wheeler who explained that the Daring is one very large power generating system using High Voltage to distribute a pure form of electrical power throughout the ship for use in its electric propulsion motors and no doubt its very high tech warfare systems. It was explained that most of the ME department consisted of ‘EL’ types, with not much call for ‘ML’ clanky types. Not a single wheel spanner was in existence, and only once a month were systems put into ‘hand’ control to ensure that the operational skills were still kept sharp. In fact the HV sections were not put into ‘hand’ at all due to the Health and Safety issues of high voltage switching.
There was what looked like a hobby lathe in the ‘workshop’ and I use that term sparingly. The Chiefs Mess no longer has draught beer (a space saving initiative) – in fact we were not even offered a drink, let alone a cup of tea and a sticky bun. There seemed to be almost no smell of diesel at all. There was evidence of chinagraph pencils in HQ1 though.

The ship had several ‘damage control’ posters throughout, most showing damage to the Sheffield. We all looked at one and started talking about the photo, to which Clint said ‘how do you know which ship it is’? to which we replied – ‘Stuart was there’. It was interesting to see how we were treated as ‘old fogy’s’ even though Dave & I still have 15 years before we retire. In fact Brian Banks (the recently civvy SR Mess President of Caledonia) and I joined in the same entry – Spike 2, September 1980. There’s still a handful of my 803 oppo’s still serving.

All in all, the ship was an eye opening experience and whilst much was brand new, there was much that we recognised and could feel at home with. Stuart only banged his head once." - Alan Ashby
